Chinese AI startup **Moonshot AI** unveiled **Kimi K3**, introducing the world's first open-source AI model in the 3-trillion-parameter class.

**Kimi K3** is a multimodal, open-weight reasoning large language model designed for complex software engineering, long-horizon coding, visual reasoning, and enterprise knowledge work.
Built with **8 trillion total parameters**, it stands as the largest open-source AI model released to date.
It was created by **Moonshot AI**, a Beijing-based artificial intelligence unicorn backed by tech giants including **Alibaba**, **Tencent**, and **Meituan**.

It uses a **Sparse Latent Mixture-of-Experts (MoE)** framework with **896 experts**, dynamically activating only **16 experts per token** to maintain high computational efficiency during inference.
It incorporates custom architectural improvements known as **Kimi Delta Attention (KDA)** to process massive context windows smoothly without losing performance speed or accuracy.
It features **Attention Residuals (AttnRes)** to optimize information flow across deep network layers, enabling deeper multi-step reasoning and sustained focus during extended coding tasks.

The model features a **1 million-token context window**, allowing it to digest entire software repositories, complex legal stacks, or massive technical documents in one single prompt.
It performs autonomous long-horizon coding and executes end-to-end software tasks with minimal human intervention, such as writing **GPU** kernel optimizations, building compilers, and designing microchips.
It combines core software engineering with visual and spatial reasoning to automate tasks in game development, front-end design, and **Computer-Aided Design (CAD)**.
**Moonshot AI** released the full model weights on **Hugging Face** under an open license, allowing researchers globally to host and study the model freely.

**Kimi K3** proves that Chinese technology companies can directly compete with American AI leaders like **OpenAI** and **Anthropic**, narrowing the global AI technology gap.
By open-sourcing its **2.8-trillion-parameter MoE model**, it widens access to frontier AI tools, lowers development costs, and speeds up worldwide research in artificial intelligence.
