The Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) recently organized a two-day regional policy meeting in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, alongside the World Bank Group.
This important event was officially named the SAPLING Dialogue 2026.

The South Asian Policy Leadership for Improved Nutrition and Growth (SAPLING) acts as a joint platform for multiple groups.
The World Bank Group leads this platform to focus heavily on policy reforms, attracting investments, and spreading agri-tech solutions.
This dialogue matches closely with the AgriConnect initiative of the World Bank.
The main target of this effort is to help 300 million farmers by the year 2030 through better infrastructure and smart policies.

The event ran under the official theme titled “Unlocking Value: Advancing Food Processing for Employment Generation and Sustainable Growth in South Asia.”
Experts and policymakers emphasized that India must shift focus away from just growing crops.
They want to prioritize food processing, supply chains, and value addition as the next big steps for the agricultural economy.
A major discussion topic was reducing high post-harvest losses across South Asia, which currently stand at over 30%.
Leaders suggested connecting farms directly to factories using strong cold chains and smart packaging.

A new report titled “Assessment of the Level of Food Processing in India” was released during the event.
The report shows that India increased its total food processing level from 10% in 2016 up to nearly 17% by 2023.
The study also points out massive hidden potential for adding value to perishable items like fruits, vegetables, and dairy.
This progress is vital for doubling farmers' incomes and increasing food exports from the country.
