- A dust storm, known locally as Andhi, is a natural weather event common in dry and semi-dry regions.
- Strong winds pick up large amounts of loose sand and dust from dry soils and create a thick wall of dust.
- This phenomenon heavily reduces visibility and ruins air quality.

- The main affected area is Northwest India, covering Rajasthan districts like Churu, Hanumangarh, Bikaner, and Jodhpur.
- It also affects Delhi-NCR, Haryana, Punjab, and western Uttar Pradesh.

How It Forms
- Pre-monsoon dust storms form due to a specific mix of heat and weather conditions.
- Intense sunshine heats up the Thar Desert between April to June, creating pockets of extreme heat and unstable air.
- This heavy heating creates a strong low-pressure zone near the ground.
- Strong south-westerly and westerly winds rush in from the Middle East and the Thar to fill this empty space, carrying heavy dust.
- Wind speeds crossing 35-40 kmph over dry soil lift dust particles into the air.
- Without the tree cover and height of the Aravallis to stop them, these winds carry dust thousands of kilometers to the east.
Key Features
