Why in News
- Union Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia and the Chief Minister of Assam launched Mission Senehjori to make Assam unique Muga silk a global luxury brand.
About Mission Senehjori
- Mission Senehjori is a cluster-based textile project that turns the Muga silk sector into a competitive luxury ecosystem. This type of silk is found exclusively in Assam.
- This project comes under the Atmanirbhar North East initiative. The Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER), the Ministry of Textiles, and the Government of Assam are working together on it.
- The mission was officially launched on June 2, 2026.
Aims and Objectives
- The main goal is to raise the yearly income of Muga rearers and weavers. Right now, their income is very low at between ₹18,000 and ₹21,000.
- It aims to make Muga silk a traceable and high-value global product while keeping the cultural heritage of Assam safe.
Key Features
- The project focuses on cluster development in major hubs like Jorhat, Sivasagar, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Sualkuchi, and Majuli.
- It will regenerate 5,000 hectares of Som and Soalu host plants. It will also build five modern reeling units and one specialized Muga Spun Mill.
- It will create 30 Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) and over 1,180 Farmer Interest Groups to support local artisans.
- It introduces QR-coded digital tracking for over 8,000 households. It also ensures that 80% of traded Muga silk gets certified under the Geographical Indication (GI) tag.
- It sets a goal to increase Muga silk exports to more than 2,000 kilograms every year by 2028.
- It includes tourism plans like a Muga Silk Trail, a Silk Tourism Park, and a yearly event called Muga Utsav.
Significance
- Cutting out middlemen and building a strong common brand helps weavers and rearers earn more money from premium products.
- Promoting Muga silk, which is the world is only naturally golden silk with a GI tag, helps India build a stronger position in the global luxury clothing market.
