Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman won the secret-ballot election to become the President of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
He defeated Andreas Kakouris of Cyprus in this election.

This is only the second time that Bangladesh has secured this important UNGA presidency.
Bangladesh previously held this prestigious post during the 41st session in 1986-87.
Khalilur Rahman will take charge when the 81st UNGA session begins in September 2026 for a one-year term.
The President of the UN General Assembly is chosen every year using a system of regional rotation among five groups of countries.
These five groups are African States, Asia-Pacific States, Eastern European States, Latin American and Caribbean States, and Western European and Other States.
The presidency for this 81st session was specially assigned to the Asia-Pacific Group.
The official theme for this upcoming session is “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations that Delivers for All.”
This theme highlights the need to rebuild trust in global institutions and improve worldwide cooperation.

The UNGA acts as one of the six main organs of the United Nations and currently includes all 193 member states.
It serves as a meeting place to discuss major global issues and pass important resolutions.
Most resolutions passed by the General Assembly are not legally binding.
The President of the General Assembly leads the meetings, manages debates, builds agreement among nations, and speaks for the Assembly with other UN bodies.
While the job is mainly procedural, it holds high diplomatic importance across the world.
