Major Indian companies such as **Adani**, **Reliance Industries**, **Hindalco**, **Vedanta**, **Powercem**, and **Coal India** are currently competing to buy the **Karlapat bauxite block** located in **Odisha**.

The **Karlapat-Pollingpadar block** is one of the largest unallocated and unmined greenfield bauxite deposits in India. Bauxite acts as the main raw material to extract alumina, which manufacturers process further to produce aluminium metal.

This bauxite block lies in the **Kalahandi district** of **Odisha**.
It is situated inside the mineral-rich **Eastern Ghats Mobile Belt**, which is famous for holding the **East Coast Bauxite** deposits.
The site sits right next to the **Karlapat Wildlife Sanctuary**, making it an ecologically sensitive area that serves as an elephant corridor.

Chemical weathering over millions of years transformed ancient rocks like **khondalites** and **charnockites** directly into this rich deposit.
The ore forms a gently rolling layer over high plateaus at heights ranging from **900 to 1,400 meters** above sea level.

The block contains an estimated resource of **207 to 220 million tonnes**, which includes **153 million tonnes** of proved reserves and **54 million tonnes** of possible reserves.
It features a high alumina content between **45.2% to 47%**, consisting mainly of the mineral **gibbsite**.
The ore contains very low levels of reactive silica, which reduces both caustic soda usage and energy costs during processing.

The deposit stretches across a plateau of about **9.6 square kilometers** or over **3,100 hectares**, with a thick ore bed measuring **12 to 15 meters**.
Because the ore contains high amounts of gibbsite, companies can extract alumina at low temperatures and low pressure using the **Bayer process**.
Unlike other regional deposits like **Panchpatmali** or **Baphilimali** that supply specific existing plants, **Karlapat** remains unassigned and can power an entirely new world-class refinery.
The government put this block up for re-auction after resolving legal delays and adjusting boundaries around the neighboring sanctuary.

Acquiring this block guarantees a steady, long-term supply of bauxite for giant metal expansion projects and boosts national manufacturing.
It strengthens **Odisha** as the primary bauxite and aluminium hub of India, supplying critical metals to sectors like electric vehicles, infrastructure, aerospace, and general manufacturing.
