India Sets Up 7th Regional Meteorological Centre in Jammu

Why in News

The Union Minister for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences recently inaugurated India's seventh Regional Meteorological Centre at Jammu.
The minister also announced that another similar meteorological centre will soon be set up in Lucknow.

Before this new launch, the India Meteorological Department managed its operations through six Regional Meteorological Centres across the country.
These older centres were located in Mumbai, Chennai, New Delhi, Kolkata, Nagpur, and Guwahati, along with various specialised units.

The new RMC in Jammu will provide weather services for Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, and Himachal Pradesh.
The upcoming centre in Lucknow will take care of weather needs for Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
The primary goal is to improve weather monitoring, forecasting, and early-warning systems for dangerous natural events.
The centre will keep a close eye on major hazards like flash floods, landslides, cloudbursts, avalanches, heavy snowfall, and thunderstorms.

The facility will deliver regional, district-wise, city-specific, tourist-specific, and mountain-weather forecasts.
It will also issue helpful weather alerts and advisories for pilgrims, farmers, and transport operators.
This addition greatly improves Himalayan weather forecasting, disaster preparedness, and climate services for the entire region.
