About Exercise Khaan Quest

  • This event is a multilateral military exercise designed to train defence forces for United Nations peacekeeping and peace support operations in a joint international setting.
  • The drill started back in 2003 as a two-country exercise between the United States and Mongolian Defence Forces.
  • It turned into a multilateral peacekeeping exercise in 2006, and the 2026 edition marks its 23rd iteration.
  • The current edition features troops from 18 countries, which includes a 40-member Indian Army team made up of soldiers from the JAT Regiment and other branches.

Objective and Strategic Significance

  • The main goal is to build better teamwork, readiness, and coordination among different militaries for peacekeeping duties under Chapter VII of the UN Charter.
  • Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter gives the UN Security Council the power to handle threats to peace, peace breaches, and acts of aggression through strong steps.
  • The training sessions cover joint planning, tactical drills, checkpoint establishment, cordon and search operations, patrolling, evacuation of civilians, counter-IED drills, combat first aid, and casualty evacuation.
  • India taking part shows its dedication to world peace, stability, and global cooperation while building stronger strategic ties with Mongolia.
