The Vice-President of India offered floral tributes to freedom fighter **Thiru Subramania Siva** on his death anniversary on **23rd July**.

He was born on **4th October 1884** at Batlagundu in the **Dindigul district** of Tamil Nadu.
He became a disciple of Sadananda Swami in **1902**, adopted the name **Sivam**, and developed a strong spiritual-nationalist mindset.

He pioneered the **Tanittamil Movement**, which advocated using pure Tamil without heavy Sanskrit influence.
He launched the nationalist journal **Gnanabhanu** in **1913** to spread patriotic ideas.
He wrote over **30 books** during his lifetime, including **Ramanuja Vijayam**, **Madhva Vijayam**, and **Vitutalaipporil Tamil Valarnta Varalaru**.

The nationalist speeches of Arya Samaj leader **Thakur Kahan Chandra Verma** inspired him to become a powerful public speaker.
He promoted the nationalist ideology of **Bal Gangadhar Tilak** alongside **V.O. Chidambaram Pillai** and **Subramania Bharati**.
He established the **Dharma Paripalana Samajam** in **1906** to encourage social reform and national pride.

He played a key role in the **Swadeshi Movement** while working closely with **V.O. Chidambaram Pillai**.
He rallied factory workers during the historic **Coral Mill Strike** of **1908** in **Thoothukudi**.
His public speeches made **Tirunelveli** a major hub for nationalist activities.
British authorities arrested him for **sedition**, making him the **first recognised political prisoner of the Madras Presidency**.
He laid the foundation for the **Bharat Mata Temple** at **Papparapatti** in **Dharmapuri** in **1923**.
He contracted **leprosy** due to harsh jail conditions and passed away on **23rd July 1925**.
