- The indigenous Sangno clan of Arunachal Pradesh has started a community translocation initiative in the East Kameng district. This effort aims to protect the endangered Himalayan ray-finned fish (Schizothorax pelzami).
What It Is
- The Himalayan ray-finned fish (Schizothorax pelzami) is a specialized freshwater species belonging to the carp family (Cyprinidae). It is commonly called the Transcaspian marinka, while the local Nyishi community refers to it as Ngarsing.
- This species belongs to the group of modern bony fishes named Teleostei. It possesses evolutionary physical traits designed specifically for survival in high-altitude cold waters.
Habitat and Distribution
- The fish is native to high-altitude, fast-flowing mountain streams, rivers, and cold torrents across the sub-Himalayan and Transcaspian zones.
- It thrives in clean and highly oxygenated glacial streams located thousands of feet above sea level, such as the Lapabung and Richaso streams in the eastern Himalayas.
- It shares river systems with larger predators like the aggressive Mahseer, which is often called the tiger of the water. Therefore, the ray-finned fish requires shallow upland streams to breed safely.
Conservation Status
- The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List officially classifies this fish species as Endangered globally.
Key Features
- Flexible bony rays support its fins, offering better balance and control while swimming in swift mountain currents.
- Its tail features equal upper and lower lobes, known as a homocercal tail. This structural design generates balanced thrust for efficient forward motion.
- The species has an extendable mouth mechanism that allows it to suck algae and small organisms directly from riverbed rocks.
- Thin and overlapping scales cover its body, which reduces body weight and water resistance during high-speed swimming.
Significance
- This species reacts quickly to changes in water temperature, pollution, and oxygen levels, serving as a reliable indicator of Himalayan river health.
- Conservation measures enforced by the Nyishi community, such as temporary fishing bans, protect fish numbers while supporting local eco-tourism and traditional livelihoods.
