  • The Union Health Minister launched nationwide celebrations under the theme “10 Years of PMSMA - A Decade of Care” to mark the completion of 10 years of the Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyaan (PMSMA).

About Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyaan

  • The Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyaan is a key program of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare that focuses on safe pregnancy and healthy motherhood.
  • Launched on 9th June 2016, the scheme offers free, specialist-led health check-ups during the second and third trimesters at designated government health facilities on the 9th of every month.
  • These check-ups help doctors spot health risks early, provide timely treatment, and ensure safer deliveries.
  • The government introduced Extended PMSMA in January 2022 to improve follow-up care for high-risk pregnancies (HRPs).
  • High-risk cases are listed, tracked individually, and monitored up to 45 days post-delivery using SMS alerts and help from ASHA workers.

Major Achievements and Health Impacts

  • More than 7.5 crore antenatal check-ups have taken place under PMSMA since it started.
  • Doctors have successfully identified nearly 1.2 crore high-risk pregnancies through this initiative.
  • India recorded an 86% decline in maternal mortality since 1990, which is much higher than the global average decline of 48%.
  • According to Sample Registration System (SRS) data, India's Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) dropped from 130 per lakh live births in 2014-16 to 87 per lakh live births in 2022-24.
  • India achieved a 79% decline in Under-Five Mortality Rate, compared to the global drop of 61%.
  • The country also saw a 70% decline in neonatal mortality between 1990 and 2024.
  • Data from the National Family Health Survey (NFHS) shows that institutional deliveries have grown to 90.6%.
  • Antenatal care coverage has reached 95.9% across the country.
  • The percentage of women getting at least four antenatal care visits rose to 65.2%.
  • First-trimester antenatal care registration improved to 76.2%.
