GPSC Exam Pattern and Marking Scheme
The GPSC Class 1-2 selection runs in three stages. Understanding how marks carry between them, and how they do not, changes what you should spend time on.
Preliminary Test pattern
The Preliminary Test is objective and multiple choice, set across two General Studies papers. The figures in the table below are measured from the answer keys this site already runs its rank predictor on, so they reflect the paper as actually sat rather than a general description of it.

Negative marking of 0.3 per wrong answer is steep enough to matter and mild enough to be misread. Three wrong answers cancel one correct one. That makes pure guessing negative in expectation across four options, and makes an educated guess after eliminating two options clearly positive. The difference between those two habits is worth more marks over 200 questions than most candidates realise.
The paper is issued in several series with the same questions in a different order, which is why comparing your answers against a key from another series requires translating the question numbers first. Our score calculator does that translation automatically.
Main Examination pattern
The Main Examination is descriptive. It comprises language papers, an essay paper and several General Studies papers, written in either Gujarati or English.
The exact paper count and mark split are published with each advertisement, and they are the numbers to read off the advertisement you are applying under rather than from any secondary source, this one included.
- Language papers are qualifying in nature. You must clear them, but clearing them is all they do for your rank.
- The General Studies papers and the essay are where the merit list is actually built.
- Every answer carries a word limit, and the word limit is part of the question. Overwriting a ten-mark answer costs you the time you needed for the next one.
Personal Interview
The final stage is a personality test conducted by a board. It is not a knowledge quiz. It draws on your application form, your academic background, your home district, your service preferences, and current affairs.
Because Prelims marks are discarded, your final rank is decided by the Mains total plus the interview alone.
How the final merit list is built, and why it matters
This is the single most consequential fact about the pattern, and it is routinely misunderstood.

The practical consequence is that time spent pushing a comfortably qualifying Prelims score higher buys nothing, while the same hours spent on answer writing buy rank directly.
